Here, in this article, we have all the information on choosing the right room for table tennis. If you follow these tips accordingly, you can buy the perfect table according to the table tennis room size.

Here are the factors you need to consider:

1. Space You Need For The Table

Do you have a big room to adjust your table? While buying the table, the first and most essential thing is to consider the room size. So, how much space do you need to adjust the table?

The length of any full-size table tennis table is 2.74 meters and the width is 1.525 meters. But, you need more space behind and side of the table for comfortable moving. Table tennis is just like any other sports. You need to move a lot to hit/return the ball. So, it is important to have a lot of space around the players.

However, after keeping the table, make sure that you have 4 steps backward and 2 steps sidewise. This space is still a bit tight for the players but you can play in such room. Ideally, you need a room of around 6.74 meters long and 3.25 meters wide for playing table tennis.

So, what to do if you do not have enough space in your room? Here are a few tips if you want to adjust a table tennis table in a smaller room.

Options For Less Space:

Squeezing In

If your room is not big enough then you should just try to squeeze in it. Suppose, if you do not have four steps backward, then keep at least two to three steps.

Adjusting to this area will be very tight but if you want to play, you got to adjust in this area. Keep in mind that, you need to be close up to the table and if you use your hand in backward direction then, you might bash your elbow or table tennis bat on the wall. So, if it better not to squeeze in a small space.

Buy ¾ Sized Tennis Table

If the table tennis room size is not large enough to adjust then, buying a smaller table can work. There are many stores that sell the ¾ size of the international standard sized table. This size is fine if you are playing with your friends and family. You will enjoy a lot in this table.

However, if you are preparing for something more intense like a table tennis match then a ¾ size table won’t be good for you. When you will play on bigger tables at the club, you will not be able to score. The smaller table will not give you a standard training. Junior table tennis tables are good for training the younger ones and also, for a home fun time.

Buy A Table Top

If you have a large dining table then, it will take up a lot of space. So, even if you have a big room, you probably would not be able to adjust your table tennis table in it. Hence, you need a better idea. Buying a table tennis table will be an absolute waste.

In such a case, you can consider buying a table top. So, when you are playing you can set the table top on the top of your dining table and when you are not using it, you can just keep it in the storeroom. You can find different sized table tops in the market.

When you are buying the table top, make sure to measure your dining table first. A lot of the people do not take the measurement and end up with a wobbly one.

A table top is a great choice if you are playing with your friends and family. It may not be a good choice if you are looking for serious training. The height of the table tennis table differs from that of the dining table.

Push Against The Wall And Use A Robot

Like me, if you do not have enough space in your home or do not have a partner to play table tennis with, then, you should purchase a tennis robot. Robots do not need backspace and you can push the table to the wall. This will also give you enough space to move freely.

If you are looking for a way to do intense training at home, tennis robot can help you. Tennis robot is widely available on the Internet.

Placing It Outside

If you live in a small house and literally have no place to keep your table tennis table then the only way is to place it outside. Get an outdoor table and keep it outside. Remember that, it is going to be really hard if there is too much wind. But during the sunny days, playing outside can be very exciting.

Here is a tip for you. You especially need to buy an outdoor table for such a case. Outdoor tables come with different material that will not get perished in rain or bad weather. So, make sure you are buying the right one from the market.

So, here are the possible things you can do if you do not have a spacious room for playing table tennis.

2. Table Quality

You have decided where you will keep your table. So, now you need to know about the quality of the table tennis table.

There are hundreds of types of tables that you can purchase from the market, some are expensive, some are cheap and some are medium-priced. But, how do you know that you are not buying a bad table at a high price?

The first rule is to judge the table by the thickness of the wooden top. The top can be 12mm to 25mm. Here, 12mm is cheap quality and 25mm is excellent quality. Hence, the thicker the wooden top of the table tennis table is, the better the quality will be.

In the 12mm ones, the ball does not bounce well and the table construction is very flimsy. So, we do not recommend you to buy such a table. The price might be cheaper but it will be an utter waste of money.

As a minimum, you can go for the ones with 19mm wooden top. These tables have a medium thickness and the price is reasonable as well. These tables are neither too expensive nor too cheap.

If your budget allows then go for the ones with thicker top such as 22mm-25mm. if you are training for an upcoming match then these will make you a pro at table tennis.

3. Other Things To Consider

  • Flooring: Ideally, it is recommended to have wooden or laminate flooring in the room where you will table tennis. In such surface, you will be able to move easily without slipping or tripping. Along with these, wooden floors are very durable.

You can also play on your carpet but you must know that carpets torn easily. Thinner carpets are better than thick ones.

Tiles flooring is good as well but as tiles tend to be slippery, there is a chance of player injury on such flooring. And, if you have weak hips, knees, or ankles, it is better to avoid playing on concrete floors.

  • Ceiling height: Ceiling height is not an important factor. And, honestly, you cannot do much about it unless you are rebuilding your home. As long as you can stand upright without any inconvenience, the ceiling height is okay. You are not going to play any international or club table tennis match in your house. Hence, the ceiling does not matter.

4. Looking After The Table

You bought your favorite table, and you cannot just leave it anywhere. You need to take proper care of it. Looking after the table tennis table is very easy. All you need to do is keep dust and water away from its surface.
